Being a Travel Nurse

Being a travel nurse is both easy and hard at the same time. Let's take some time to review a few things that make it hard and a few things that make it easy.

Hard Transitions

Traveling often requires frequent transitions. You may change assignments every three months. Each time you change assignments, you change where you live, where you work, your friends you hang out with and more. It's a huge transition. Some people thrive on transitions, while others can find it to be a challenge. However, remember that many travelers can elect to extend their assignments and make them last longer than 3 months at a time, thus decreasing the amount of transitions encountered in a year.

New facilities

Going to new facilities can be difficult at first because you have to be quick on your feet and be able to learn fast. You must deal with many new personalities at one time, and new technology as well. You will be expected to be fully functional with very little orientation to the facility. You must be self reliant in finding your answers and locating supplies. It’s challenging, but the challenge can be fun as well. .

Easy Same job

No matter where you go, you have the same job. The faces may change, but the job remains the same, in general. If you know your job well, you will do fine. The medications are the same and the patients still need the same kind of care for their conditions.

Say goodbye to politics

You no longer have to deal with hospital politics, at least not to the same degree. Most of the time as a traveler, you will not even be aware of all the politics in the workplace. Believe it or not, this can be a major stressor at many work facilities. Who is going to be the new manager, will they like me, that one nurse makes my life difficult. However, when you work as a traveler, you can focus on getting to know people and on taking care of your patients. Depending on your personality, you may not even care if anyone likes you or not. You are there to make good money and explore the area on your time off.
